Free Nursery Rhyme Lyrics

You've got to know a few nursery rhyme lyrics if you're entertaining a toddler for any length of time. Singing nursery rhymes is great for developing language and music abilities, and it's also a fun bonding activity you and your child can do together.

If you're looking for nursery rhyme lyrics for "Baa Baa Black Sheep", "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" or "Row, Row, Row Your Boat", you'll find those over on our Popular Nursery Rhymes page.

Dad and babyIf you'd like lyrics for the rest of the classic nursery rhymes, just scroll down this page to find some that you'd like to sing with your child. The titles are in alphabetical order for easier reference.

NB: The Humpty Dumpty nursery rhyme and the Jack and Jill nursery rhyme are not ones I like to sing with young children because of the negative (sometimes fearful) images these nursery rhyme lyrics can create in a toddler's mind. Perhaps we could label these 'PG' for Parental Guidance needed?

Grand Old Duke of York

Oh, the Grand Old Duke of York
He had ten thousand men
He marched them up to the top of the hill
And he marched them down again

And when they were up, they were up
And when they were down, they were down
And when they were only halfway up
They were neither up nor down

Hey, Diddle, Diddle

Hey, diddle, diddle, the cat and the fiddle
The cow jumped over the moon
The little dog laughed to see such fun
And the dish ran away with the spoon

Hickory Dickory Dock

Hickory dickory dock
The mouse ran up the clock
The clock struck one
The mouse ran down
Hickory dickory dock

Humpty Dumpty

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall
All the King's horses
And all the King's men
Couldn't put Humpty together again

Jack and Jill

Jack and Jill went up the hill
To fetch a pail of water
Jack fell down and broke his crown
And Jill came tumbling after

Up Jack got and home did trot
As fast as he could caper
He went to bed to mend his head
With vinegar and brown paper

Little Bo Peep

Little Bo Peep has lost her sheep
And doesn't know where to find them
Leave them alone and they'll come home
Wagging their tails behind them

Little Boy Blue

Little Boy Blue, come blow your horn
The sheep's in the meadow, the cow's in the corn
Where is the boy who looks after the sheep?
He's under the haycock fast asleep
Will you wake him? No, not I!
For if I do, he's sure to cry

Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary

Mary, Mary, quite contrary
How does your garden grow?
With silver bells and cockle shells
And pretty maids all in a row

Old King Cole

Old King cole was a merry old soul
And a merry old soul was he
He called for his pipe and he called for his bowl
And he called for his fiddlers three

Now, every fiddler had a fine fiddle
And a very fine fiddle had he
Oh, there's none so rare that can compare
With King Cole and his fiddlers three!

Polly, Put the Kettle On

Polly, put the kettle on
Polly, put the kettle on
Polly, put the kettle on
We'll all have tea

Susie, take it off again
Susie, take it off again
Susie, take it off again
They've all gone away

Pop Goes the Weasel

Half a pound of tuppenny rice
Half a pound of treacle
That’s the way the money goes
Pop! goes the weasel

Up and down the city road
In and out the Eagle
That’s the way the money goes
Pop! goes the weasel

Polish up your singing voice with these nursery rhyme lyrics! Don't worry, your toddler doesn't care whether you're tone deaf or a virtuoso, they just want to have fun!

If you've already checked out the three most popular nursery rhymes, why not try a few action rhymes?
