St. George's Day Toddler Activities

boy with St. George flag of EnglandSt. George's Day is our opportunity to commemorate the Patron Saint of England, by celebrating all that England is known for and brilliant at (sort of).

Football (soccer to American folks), Big Ben, Harry Potter, Stonehenge, the Royal Family, good old fish and chips...

So, why not celebrate England's national day with your child with these St. George's Day toddler activities?

Toddler Craft Activities

Creating the England FlagYou need an A5 piece of card (half of letter size), cut two thin strips out of red card (21cm/8” long and 14 ½/ nearly 6” long) and a glue stick. You could show your toddler an England flag or a picture of one. Let her stick the strips how she likes onto the card. Tape 2 or 3 ice lolly (popsicle) sticks together at the ends and then to the flag. Or it could be easier to use a stick from the garden (back yard).

Potato Printing

Use England's favourite vegetable to make toddler art. Cut a cross shape out of half a potato so your little one can make lots of mini 'English flags' on a white piece of card.

Draw in Mashed Potato

This is very popular along with many other tactile activities. Either place the mashed potato in a deep tray (like a new cat litter tray) on top of newspaper or in a sand/water tray with legs. You could add a little red food colouring which would help to highlight the difference between messy play and eating.

Football (Soccer) Collage

Since football is England's national sport (and usually what the England flag is used to represent) you could do a toddler craft activity of a traditional English football. Draw around a medium to large upturned bowl on white paper and cut it out. Then cut a lot of small hexagons out of black card. Let your toddler decorate a football.

Other St. George's Day Toddler Activities

'Play' Toddler Football

Basically kick a ball around with your toddler. :-)

Create a Marching Band

Either listen to traditional brass band music and march around waving the flags you made or make your own home made musical instruments to play instead. Click here to learn how to make musical instruments.

Have a Red day

Even though it's part of our society for preschoolers to "know their colours", it is a very abstract concept. Keep in mind that, with all the many shades of the same colour, it's harder to learn than it first appears.

This St. George's Day toddler activity is a perfect way for a toddler to learn the colour red in fun ways throughout the day. You can focus on as many or as few red things as you like - just continually point them out to your toddler. Feel free to substitute red for another colour on any other day as a colour learning activity.

Here are some red suggestions:

I hope you enjoy doing these St. George's Day toddler activities with your little one.
