Toddler Activities

in the Kitchen

Things needed for toddler activities are all around us. Toddler-proofed kitchens where safe objects are accessible hold loads of learning activities for toddlers. As these free toddler games need adult supervision they also create excellent bonding opportunities.

Invite your Toddler to Cook
Cooking creates excellent learning and bonding activities for 1 year olds and up. Check out what toddlers can cook.

Let your Toddler Explore the Cupboards
First place safe items in at least some of the bottom kitchen cupboards like pans/pots and lids, chopping board, trays, cake/pie tins, muffin/fairy cake trays, safe cooking utensils, plastic containers and lids and cans of food etc and obviously keep any dangerous items out of reach.

This needs supervision but not necessarily interaction. There’s huge value in letting young children concentrate on exploring. If your toddler invites you, of course, go ahead and show interest and share your knowledge.

Filling and Emptying are Underrated Free Toddler Games
Simply letting your toddler have access to safe bowls, boxes, tubs, pans/pots, tins, bags and safe items to transfer between containers. This simple activity for toddlers builds the foundation for more complex scientific and mathematic knowledge he will learn later. There’s some variations on this theme on our easy home made toys page.

Sense-ational Discoveries
Tactile Activities are best done in the kitchen as it’s messy play. There’s so many options of tactile activities for you to choose from.

These are Popular Toddler Activities
Provide an empty ice cube tray, muffin/fairy cake tray, another container with compartments or a cardboard egg box (which can be sterilised by microwaving for 30 secs). Provide a bowl of dry cereal, raisins or other finger food next to it. Ideally do toddler activities in a different place from where she normally eats, however it doesn’t matter if she just wants to eat the food though. This creates a safe learning activity for toddlers to practise their pincer grasp. Toddlers need to strengthen the small muscles in their hands to prepare them for writing.

Creative Stacking Toys
Empty your kitchen roll holder and mug tree. Let your toddler place bangles and chunky napkin rings on them instead.

Sink Play is a Timeless Pre-School Idea
You could either let your toddler sit in the sink or stand on a chair next to it. There’s so many different possibilities of water play that we’ve have a page full of them.

Weighing Scales are Wonderful Learning Tools
Supply any sort of weighing scales and things of different weights (fruit, vegetables, cans, packets of crips (chips), crackers etc). Simply let your toddler discover this preschool math activity.

I hope you found these toddler activities useful and that your toddler enjoys them.
